A representative from Uzbekistan was elected to the Human Rights Committee for the first time in history
The Director of the National Center for Human Rights of Uzbekistan, academician Akmal Saidov, was elected as a member of the Human Rights Committee for the period 2025-2028. This is a significant achievement for the country, indicating recognition of its efforts in the field of human rights in the international arena.
The elections took place on May 29 at the UN Headquarters in New York City, as part of the 40th session of the States Parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Representatives of 16 states - Burundi, Georgia, Egypt, India, Spain, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Lithuania, Morocco, Paraguay, the Republic of Korea, North Macedonia, Togo, Croatia, Ethiopia, and South Africa - applied for 9 seats on the HRC, along with Uzbekistan.
Based on the results of a secret ballot, the candidate from Uzbekistan received the largest number of votes from ICCPR member countries.
The election of a representative from Uzbekistan to the HRC is a historical event, as Uzbekistan is the first Central Asian country to join this key UN body.
This event is the result of active diplomatic efforts by Uzbekistan in the international arena. In recent years, the Republic has made significant strides in improving the human rights situation, introducing reforms, and developing cooperation with international organizations.
The Human Rights Committee is a UN body consisting of independent experts who monitor the implementation of the ICCPR by state parties. There are 173 states participating in the pact. Uzbekistan acceded to this international document in 1995. The Committee's activities are aimed at ensuring full respect for all civil and political human rights.
